From miniature portraits kept in lockets to full-body images on large-scale canvases that adorn their houses’ empty, vast walls. Thus, only members of the most affluent families could afford to commission a renowned artist to paint their huge portraits, as this practice was a luxury only the rich could afford. J. Ocampo exemplified his adept artistry and fine-tuned brushwork in this ca. 1900s 'Portrait of an Old Lady'. Wearing an exquisite traditional 'baro't saya' while sitting on a chair and having her arm placed atop the table, this piece profoundly encapsulates the elderly woman’s comfortable and dignified life. Moreover, the artist skillfully captured the intricate details on her clothes, jewelry, and facial and skin features, showing her old age but still exuding an immense amount of sophistication.
