Commonly known as ZNY, Zenaida Laygo was an internationally acclaimed Filipina artist famed for her expressionist works in watercolor and oil. Having a background as an illustrator, ZNY’s deft sketching abilities, coupled with her sense of rhythm and movement perfected through scratchboard work and Chinese brush-on-rice paper paintings, all constituted the strong composition of her works.

Color has always been a dominant force in Philippine aesthetics. ZNY’s adept employment of colors marked a significant milestone in her painting career, bringing her work closer to the Filipino color palette and temperament. Baguio City, an oil on canvas work from 1956, is a testament to her recent shift in colorwork. It offers a panoramic view of the breathtaking landscape of the City of Pines at night, capturing the city’s magnificent nature and buoyant nightlife. Her dexterous hands depicted geometric, jewel-toned houses set amidst verdant foliage and iconic pine trees, illuminated by the moon’s soft glow from above the clouds. (Jessica Magno)
