Mostly active from the 1970s to the 1980s, Mario P. Munár consistently showed his passion for depicting the movement through the human body with one of his most prominent paintings, Igorot Dance, featuring the strong and lithe bodies of the dancers as they move.
\nThis emphasis on movement, too, is apparent in this 1973 piece. Two figures occupy the majority of the canvas, bodies flush and back-to-back as though they are dancing. A light shines on them, a mimic of a disco light. Munár’s work revels in motion and he manages to soften cubism’s edges, its figure’s sway evident. (Hannah Valiente)
