All the while running the family business, Elena also made a name for herself as an artist, wherein she takes on the name Gelena. Throughout her career, she explored various styles and mediums but found functional art her favorite form— painting on existing everyday objects or crafting anew, creating artworks that can be actually used, such as chairs, tables, and doors. One of her most revered pieces was her cremation urns, decorated with papier-mache, acrylic, oil, and stones and beaded jewelry, which aims to change the world’s view of death not as a void but as a happy transition to the next soul journey. Elena’s works are highly influenced by Austrian symbolist painter Gustav Klimt—evident in the hints of gold, bubbly scribbles, and ornately patterned surfaces. Her designs also reference African and Egyptian art, which she likes for their bold colors and patterns that are perfect with her own decorative aesthetic. Elena Roces would marry Mario Guerrero, brother of Leon Ma. Guerrero and Carmen Guerrero Nakpil. Morita and Mario were both artists on the Philippine Art Gallery roster, with Mario serving as its president at one time.
