He is adept at both figuration and abstraction and it seems the lines are blurred whenever he makes his pieces. His abstractions carry a sense of form and shape to them, echoing natural objects even as they bend and flow to fluid shapes. Likewise, his figurations blur around the edges, making it seem as though it is less locked in than usual pieces.</p>\n<p>This 1963 piece echoes that marriage between styles. In the usual Aguilar-Alcuaz fashion, his abstractions seemed almost figurative, his interlocking shapes and amorphous forms creating a sense of stability. Surreal and somber, this work makes great use of illusory geography, cleverly tricking its viewers in broad daylight.
