A handful of eminent artists met at the Taza de Oro in Ermita along Roxas Boulevard where they enjoyed each other’s company. Among their most illustrious is Hernando R. Ocampo. Already a prominent artist by the time of the group’s creation, Alfredo Roces considered Ocampo, whom he called Nanding, a key player in their weekly meetings – though there is no official president in the group, Ocampo almost always takes its de facto position, mostly due to his experience and accolades. The Saturday Group served as the perfect place for ideas to culminate and grow, with Ocampo a central figure of it all.
