Ocampo’s pen-and-ink works echo his iconic abstractions. A melting pot of techniques and inspirations, Ocampo’s colored abstractions are a vision of exploding hues, all bright, vivid, and almost impossible in intensity. In contrast, this 1973 sketch is devoid of colors; still, it did not lack fervor. Ocampo focuses on the center of the canvas, breaking up the plane of his subject in varying shades of opacity. Even without his signature colors, Ocampo’s study of how hues clash and blend is still evident, now through various shades of shadows and light.
