The Saturday Group was noted for introducing the concept of “interaction” painting to the local art scene, and Roces was said to be its progenitor when he introduced on-the-spot collective painting. Critic Leo Benesa once wrote that the Group’s interaction painting sessions were avenues not only for strengthening the bond of its artists but also to raise funds for the group’s needs and continued existence.

The work at hand, titled Abstraction K-71, is a collaboration between Ocampo and Roces, the Saturday Group’s founding fathers. It was exhibited at the Solidaridad Galleries in a mid-1971 show titled Interaction ’71, the first exhibition where the Saturday Group showcased the style they had pioneered in the local art scene.

Roces once said in a 1974 interview that the Group’s interaction sessions work like a jazz group. “In a jazz group, members play a different instrument each, yet contribute to the harmony of the whole picture,” he said.

Abstraction K-71 captures an improvisation that espouses the individuality of both artists yet fosters a collective spirit rooted in reverence and respect towards the other artist’s sense of self, especially in an artistic and cultural environment such as our country’s that has always been grounded in diversity.
