This lot offers one of the artist’s fine prints, the 1970 Dolorosa III, finished a year after he received a gold medal at the II Internazionale della Grafica in Florence, Italy. Despite his image’s almost incomprehensible form, she appears to be in a state of despair and desolation, perhaps relating to the Mater Dolorosa (Mother of Sorrows) figure. Aside from being an artist, he was also a curator, critic, art historian, and writer, producing a number of literary works on several revered Filipino artists such as Dominador Castañeda, Galo Ocampo, and Vicente Manansala, to name a few.
