Rare Sculptural Protest Art by Social Realist Danilo Dalena

The 1970s in the Philippines was one of the darkest times of the recent past, marked by political unrest, societal concerns, and a national struggle to survive. These themes adorned Danilo Dalena’s works, showcasing the Filipinos’ resilience and plight for freedom, eventually leading to his rise in the art scene.

\n

Dalena’s oeuvre mirrors the less respectable side of life in Manila, but it also reflects universal themes of poverty, prostitution and exploitation, inequality, and human rights abuses. Encapsulated in different forms and media—cartoons and illustrations, paintings, and sculptures—these works were the product of his observations and perspectives on the prevailing social conditions.

Alay Kay Brigida is a plastic sculpture that belongs to Dalena’s masterpieces. This piece depicts a victim—a protester—futilely protecting himself from being physically attacked by the military. Despite the lack of distinguishable facial features and expressions, this piece, with every twist and turn of the material, nevertheless exudes feelings of anguish and misery. Created in 1972, Alay Kay Brigida symbolizes the Filipinos’ long-standing defiance against the abusive and deceptive people in power. (Jessica Magno)
