Repoussé is one of these methodologies. This metalworking technique creates three-dimensional reliefs in metal sheets, producing imagery that usually features culture and tradition. The process involves hammering the metal sheet from the back to lift the image from the sheet surface and then engraving the front side to add intricate details and definition. Although overlooked by many artists today, repoussé was an ancient art form and cultural phenomenon that gained immense popularity in the 17th and 18th centuries.
