Like his father, Porfirio excelled in using a realistic approach to portray his subjects. The artist’s dexterity is perfectly demonstrated in this oil on paper work, 'Bird Studies', featuring detailed illustrations of kingfishers. They are bright-colored birds usually living in tropical regions, while some are found in Europe and the Americas. Porfirio Castañeda exceptional brushwork and outstanding command of colors excellently delineated the species’ shiny beaks, beady eyes, and expressions full of determination. Additionally, this piece is highly detailed, with its vibrant and lively hues, the artist’s fine brushstrokes capturing every detail of the feather and intricate patterns.
