During, and shortly after, his time as a Fine Arts student majoring in Sculpture at the University of the Philippines, he already started apprenticing under master sculptors Anastacio Caedo and Napoleon Abueva, both of whom he accounted for as having an immense influence on his craft. Despite moving to Manila during college, Rocha still prefers to use kamagong, molave, and narra woods obtained from the province, bringing his home with every piece.
