The natural heir to the greatness of Guillermo Tolentino and Napoleon Abueva, Castrillo steered clear from his mentor’s classical leanings and instead veered towards modernism, a movement that was already thriving in several other visual art mediums but not in sculpture.
\n

In this 1973 sculpture, Castrillo eschews depicting a figure rooted in reality; instead, this particular sculpture plays around with edges and corners. This sculpture echoes Castrillo’s shocking oeuvre, one that reverberated through the then-slumbering sculpting genre and breathed new life into it.
