Largely celebrated for his large-scale historical paintings, Torres immortalizes the Philippines’ collective history, masterfully portraying the country’s resistance throughout history, all framed under the sepia tone of nostalgia. With the works in hand, Torres combines the beauty that comes from classical portraits and injects into it Filipino humor. Both of them are awash with sepia, firmly placing them in the past, but anachronism runs abound. Salsa dancers, dogs, and the like warrant a second look, and with that, his works simply don’t tell a story. They endure, as his visual symbolism teems with the timeless theme of struggle, selfhood, collectivism, and liberation.
