These works are often used\nto describe the works of Jojo Legaspi. A cursory glance at\nLegaspi’s pieces arguably suggests that the artist’s work is not\nfor the faint of heart. From uncanny expressions to suggestive\nposes and distressing circumstances, Legaspi’s works are\nwildly different from the idyllic scenes and landscapes that\nonce dominated Philippine art. But beyond the inherent\nuncanniness of his works lies an intimate exploration and\ncritique of human existence itself; available only to those\nwho dare go beyond his eerie veneer. Much like his practice,\nLegaspi’s interest in art also stemmed from an unusual place.\nThe artist’s degrees in Biology and Zoology allowed him to\nobserve his desired subject matter in a meticulous and almost\nAccompanied by a certificate signed by the artist\nconfirming the authenticity of this lot\nclinical manner; allowing him access into the relationship\nbetween the physiological, psychological, and visual elements\nof his forms and figures.\nThis particular charcoal on paper piece features a human\nfigure against an inky and abyssal backdrop; with only a\nthin and precarious tightrope separating the figure and an\nunknown mass below. Interestingly enough, the ominous\nmass is not rendered in the same way as the dark void,\nbut is of the same shade as the figure itself. This seemingly\nsuggests the level of awareness that the figure has, in which\nwhat they are trying to avoid is not something foreign or\nalien, but something inherent to his very being and existence.\nThus the scene seemingly alludes to a quote by the German\nphilosopher Friedrich Nietzsche in which he states “Battle not\nwith monsters, lest ye become a monster, and if you gaze into\nthe abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.” The quote itself\nwarns us that if we allow a descent into our fear, hatred or\nunchecked righteousness , we reflect that abyss, our shadow\n‘the monster’. The precarious nature of Legaspi’s scene\nperfectly reflects this as he reveals to us that one of the most\npressing threats to our existence is ourselves.","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":"
Jojo Legaspi (b. 1959)
Untitled
signed (lower right)
charcoal on paper
45” x 45” (114 cm x 114 cm)
","alias":null,"hp":500000,"bp":0.168,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":500000,"userBid":7890,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":584000,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":11222,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/11/20/lot/1185.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[450000,500000,550000,600000,650000,700000,750000,800000,900000,1000000,1100000,1200000,1300000,1400000,1500000,1600000,1700000,1800000,1900000,2000000,2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":1184,"next":1186,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
