In the early\ndays of his career, his style leaned towards monochromatic colors\nof black and white. As he evolved and grew as an artist, Antonio\nshowcased his uniqueness by integrating stylized representation\nand color schemes into his works. Like his wife, Norma Belleza,\nAntonio has a penchant for the folk genre, depicting native\nfolks that encapsulate a bona fide representation of Filipino\nlifestyle and values.

\nThis painting reflects Antonio’s paramount concern in his art—\nthe advancement and fostering of Filipino culture, specifically\nour natural matriarchal tendency. As an emerging artist during\nthe 1960s, Antonio and his contemporaries at the University of\nSanto Tomas—Tam Austria and Mario Parial—became associated\nwith the Urban Folk genre. Antonio’s excursion to this genre\nresulted in an experimentation with dynamic colors to define\nhis figures, thus emphasizing the folk-ness of the composition.\nBut the true strength of this work lies in its bizarre balance of\njarring yet harmonious flow of colors that accentuate Antonio’s\nunique approach towards figurative distortion. In 1968, when\nAntonio produced this work, art critic Jolico Cuadra described\nAntonio’s art during this period, writing that the artist executes\nhis works “in brisk, impatient strokes that shatter their natural\nboundaries. They are no longer simply decorative... [but are]\nnow fiercely emotional symbols.”","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":"
Angelito Antonio (1939 - 2025)
Mag-Ina
signed and dated 1968 (lower right)
oil on canvas
36 1/2” x 34” (93 cm x 86 cm)
","alias":null,"hp":550000,"bp":0.168,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":550000,"userBid":5933,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":0,"hammer_price":642400,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":11331,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/11/20/lot/1296.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[450000,500000,550000,600000,650000,700000,750000,800000,900000,1000000,1100000,1200000,1300000,1400000,1500000,1600000,1700000,1800000,1900000,2000000,2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":1295,"next":1297,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
