This 1958 work, done three years after his move to San Miguel de Allende in Mexico, still contains that quintessential fluidity and translucency of his Filipino pieces. The subject matter is truly Filipino, too – his darkskinned woman squats on the floor in her skirt as she watches her palayok over the fire. Like many of his works during the period, his darkly-toned proletarian paintings approach Expressionism through their long, elongated bodies and the slightest hint of distortion peering through.
