In a country used to the romantic depictions of flowers and gardens and the frivolities of rural life, Onib’s unflinching subscription to wretched horrors is both a breath of fresh air and unmitigated shock. Both the works in hand are untitled portraits of women. These kinds of portraits are often bathed in vibrant colors, and the women are depicted as anatomically correct as possible. However, in Onib’s case, he distorts as freely as possible. He disregards anatomy in favor of emotions, preferring to disfigure as a way to translate emotional turmoil. As such, his portraits reflect the desolate inner life of his women; their eyes are narrow and uneven, their faces are large, and their necks are small. As one looks at these women, one is taken by their despair, their anger, and most important of all, their resilience.
