This particular nude, done in 2004, is of the same shade as his Mindscape series, with its soft colors and ethereal atmosphere. The women portrayed are without their bodies, prompting the viewers to note only their curves. Yet, it is not erotic – indeed, it’s an appreciation of the beauty of a woman’s body divorced from sexual thoughts. It is beauty for beauty’s sake. Nuyda’s impeccable portrait, aptly titled Portrait of Patrick Layog, shows a rare side of the artist. Done using pastel, Nuyda’s aptitude on human anatomy is highly laudable, with the man’s baleful look forward a palpable feeling of melancholy and hope. Indeed, Nuyda’s portraits and nudes in and of itself is a masterful proof of the artist’s talent and dexterity, befitting one of the country’s best contemporary artists.
