After stopping formal art education after one semester, Malang went to work for a newspaper, apprenticing under cartoonist Liborio Gatbonton. Mauro Malang Santos’ paintings were first exhibited solo in 1962. Two years later, the Society of Philippine Illustrators and Cartoonists made him Artist of the Year. Later in his career, Malang expanded his interest in art. Cubism and abstract modern portraits became the style and subject of his paintings in the early 1990s. Images of expressive female figures in impoverished areas of the Philippines, characterized by ragged yet traditional clothing, were key features in his artwork. His meticulous linework consists of neat, thumb-size shapes with clean-cut edges. His paintings resemble glorified versions of his cartoon work, delighting in transcribing the cornucopia-baroque motifs that adorn churches, casas, and Antillean houses, transforming banalities into visually attractive patterns. His featured piece entitled White Church showcases his proficiency in the style, which creatively portrays a traditional rural setting of a church surrounded by houses and other establishments at the center of a square plaza, depicting a conventional Filipino Pueblo, highlighting the importance of the church being the “center” of a Filipino community.
