As the first woman to be conferred the prestigious Thirteen Artists Award, it is no surprise that her works have stood the test of time, with their distinctive blend of historical, medieval, and religious references alongside their contemporary counterparts. A great example of this is her 1989 Crucifixion. Echoing the works of Ambrogio Lorenzetti, whom she paid homage to two years prior the work at hand, Crucifixion showcases that image with an anachronistic twist. Although one could see the usual crucifixion scenes—with Christ on the cross and the Virgin Mary among the crowds—a couple of inconsistencies stand out. At the feet of the cross sits a man in a uniform, cross-legged and unaware (or uncaring) of the gaggle of people behind him. On the far right is a pair of Roman soldiers, their SPQR shield evident. However, the most interesting is a woman right in the middle of the piece. The entire piece is covered in elaborate gold borders; however, this woman exists outside the border. She peers in, stalks of sampaguita flowers in her hand like a vendor outside a church, an outsider looking in. Through this work, Gelvezon-Tequi makes the Filipino both participants and spectators of religion and history, repositioning the sacrifice of Christ in the context of Filipino culture and politics.
