Here, he incorporated the mother and child theme into one of the most well-known practices of selling goods in the provinces—a carabao-pulled cart filled to the brim with items up for sale. The cart was filled with a plethora of items, ranging from everyday essentials like brooms, clay pots, baskets, and hand fans to decorative objects such as chimes and garlands. It was like a roving market, roaming around barrios to sell their products. Typically, men are the ones who manage this practice, but the artist’s depiction of a woman with a child on her lap could be an allusion to the lengths a mother would go through for her children. Filipino in subject and color, Nestor Leynes stunningly immortalizes the Philippine culture and tradition in his canvases.
