His figures are characterized by large heads and elongated necks, resembling wooden dolls, and clad in 19th-century clothing. He often situates them against nature and old architecture, which are portrayed as impossibly small compared to his figures. Rubio also explored the religious theme, as evident in his oil on canvas work, Homage to Our Lady of Solitude. The artist’s ability to manipulate his figures and dimensions demonstrates his knowledge of human anatomy and clever utilization of space. Indeed, Rubio’s comical interpretation of his subjects offers a sense of peculiarity while also exuding familiarity and nostalgia for the days of yore.
