Saavedra describes his works as ugly because they involve the use of bold and almost erratic gestural strokes that are recognizable enough to forego pure abstraction. His pieces capture the world in both a state of form and decay, with his featured artwork depicting a soldier holding a rifle. The body is illustrated with thick, rough brushstrokes using dark tones—mainly blacks, grays, and muted pinks—against a background of soft, pale green and hints of white and yellow. The details are obscured and almost dark and haunting, suggesting themes such as the anonymity of war, memory, or trauma.
