Born to a\nworking-class family in Tondo, Habulan developed a keen awareness of the deteriorating condition of\nPhilippine society and the struggles of its people. Due to this, he became one of the major members of Kaisahan,\na group of socially committed artists during the period of dictatorship in the Philippines around the 1970s.\nHis artworks constantly explore the dialectics where the salve, native, and colonial, lowlander, and the ethnic\ncollide in a controlled tension. Such pieces aim to tell the stories of the Filipino people, highlighting the triumph\nof the human spirit amidst their daily challenges. His portrayal of the comparison between the oppressed and\nthe wealthy, as well as his later shift in theme to focus on religion and tradition, continues to uplift and inspire,\ndespite the harsh realities they depict.
