While his early works followed the traditional style in painting, he was most known for his kaleidoscopic non-figurative works. Nonetheless, his canvases highlighted Filipino folk life, ensuring that the Filipino essence is seen and felt through his paintings. The work at hand portrays a young maiden clad in a baro’t saya while carrying a bilao, all in the glory of her honey-brown complexion. Depicting a familiar countryside scene, this 1986 pastel-on-paperwork showcases Joya’s exceptional talent and versatility across different styles and mediums, going  back to his roots in figurative art after years of venturing into the world of abstraction. In 2003, the Philippine government conferred the title of National Artist for Visual Arts on Jose Joya for his outstanding contributions to Philippine art.
