Garnering multiple awards at the prestigious Internationale Exposition des Peintures at the Chateau Musee de Cagnes-sur-Mer in France, Onib became the first Filipino to win a distinction in the competition with his black-and-white pieces entitled The Apartment and Concert in the Alley, both dealing with a particular aspect of humanity. This particular work, entitled Portrait of a Man, was created within that momentous year.<br> Like his winning pieces at the Internationale Exposition des Peintures, Portrait of a Man reveals the intricacies and hardships of human life. Where The Apartment depicts a flimsy two-storey house to reveal the wretchedness of poverty, Portrait of a Man does the same thing through the man’s portrait. Onib’s figures have always been stretched and disfigured, a way to reflect their inner emotions on the outside. This man, with his disproportional head and haunted look in his eyes, conveys a deeply hidden terror and fear. In the deliberate darkness, a vase of flowers can be seen, almost entirely covered in the shadows.<br> “His portraits probe the point where physical appearance with its social conventions gives way to the spirit within which, slowly but inexorably, takes over,” quotes the artist’s monograph Onib Olmedo: Dimensions of Depth. Indeed, like many of Onib’s portraits, Portrait of a Man makes physical what is usually emotional, letting the body be as battered as one’s emotions are, battle-weary and still persevering.
