Federico Aguilar Alcuaz’s fluidity between abstract and figurative expressionism reinforces his mastery as a National Artist of the Philippines. In the 1960s, alongside his prolific body of works in Europe and Manila, Alcuaz produced small-scale works he referred to as “notes”. These pieces served as creative studies or preliminary explorations, often carried during his travels.
These “notes” echo the aesthetic of his Barcelona Period works, showcasing abstract expressionism rendered in watercolor, graphite, pen ink, and markers. The gestural brushwork, central cluster of forms, and subtle color palette reveal a more contemplative and spiritual dimension of Alcuaz’s art. The backgrounds, suggestive of mountaintops and skies tinted with sunset orange and afternoon blue, add a narrative layer to the abstract imagery.
As Paras-Perez noted, this approach highlights Alcuaz’s innovative spirit of the academic rules. His embrace of visual disarray reflects a spiritual balance aligned with the philosophy of yin and yang. Together, these works create a dialogue between chaos and harmony. The skillful conjunction of elements adds to their charming complexity; although modest in scale, they exhibit the excellence and refinement of Alcuaz’s contribution to modern visual art.
