Despite his relative success, Valledor chose to remain a low profile, spending his remaining years as a family man, an artist, and a teacher until his death in 1989.

San Francisco, and in particular the Fillmore district, served as an important landmark in Valledor’s life. Finding him an orphan by the time he was twelve, he was later raised by a houseful of bachelor “uncles”, that is to say, recently immigrated men looking for work with his recently deceased mother.

More than that, the sprawling city life of the Fillmore district greatly affected the young Valledor’s creative direction. “A ghetto within another ghetto within a metropolis,” as described by his cousin and fellow artist Carlos Villa, the Fillmore district was the epicenter of jazz on the West Coast, with Valledor a part of the “Beat” scene, the crosscultural and dynamic fusion of visual art, jazz music, and poetry.

With that, it is not hard to imagine Valledor’s work concurrent with music. As a young artist, his first exhibition was titled Compositions: Jazzus Series. He himself was a saxophone player; as such, he managed to create artworks that include the carefully constructed yet improvisational quality of free jazz.

This particular work, created in 1977, was from that quiet period of Valledor’s life. Truly a Valledor piece, A Little Kiss is a minimal, color field painting. Like the majority of

his life, Valledor’s works are a melting pot of culture and ideas. His West Coast sensibilities are powered through in that fruitful decade in New York; eventually, he became closely associated with the influential Park Place Gallery in SoHo, Manhattan, leading into his avant-garde interests of minimalism and conceptualism. That, combined with his West Coast-fueled jazz appreciation, created a truly unique sensation that comes only from the melding of cultures as experienced by Valledor himself.

In its simplicity, A Little Kiss embodies all of that which makes Valledor’s works sustain through the decades. With a controlled understanding of color, Valledor knew how to wield hues as a conductor knows how to control an orchestra.

“That’s an idea I have about the complementary colors, and the rest is intuitive. I mix the colors the way I want to see it,” Valledor once said. “It’s like placing two certain notes of sound together and you get a tone.” br>
Indeed, Valledor’s A Little Kiss is a culmination of his life teachings wrapped in one. With his innate understanding of color and shapes, he adds one other element – his expert usage of negative space. Partnered with an installationlike approach, A Little Kiss enhances Valledor’s work through its spatial awareness and its three-dimensional aspect.
