Like his brother, the maestro himself, Fernando Amorsolo, Pablo learned the rudiments of art from his uncle, another esteemed artist, Fabian de la Rosa. He finished a Fine Arts degree in 1924 at the University of the Philippines School of Fine Arts, where he would also become an instructor and mentor to the country’s future acclaimed artists.

One of the striking differences between the Amorsolo brothers’ works lies in their distinct use of light and color. While Fernando is celebrated for his vibrant, sunlit canvases, Pablo’s works are characterized by a more subdued, monochromatic palette.

Pablo Amorsolo’s Seascape depicts a scenic view by the shore, set against a lush and magnificent mountain. There was a small group of fishermen, securing their fishing boats and tidying up their materials after a long day of toil in the sea. The waters are calm, and the nearby lighthouse casts its light on the mountain, delineating its heavenly features. Nevertheless, the entire scenery is bathed in the moon’s soft glow.

Painted during the Japanese occupation of the country, a period marked by hardship and struggle, this image mirrors the idyllic Philippines. While Pablo’s monochromatic hues and heavy shadows evoke a gloomy atmosphere, he still manages to capture the simplicity and contentment of the pre-war Philippines, bringing to the surface sense of nostalgia and affecting the viewers’ emotional response, making them yearn for the days of simplicity and contentment, times they could never return to.

Pablo Amorsolo’s Seascape is not only a testament to the skilled artistry of one of the masters of Philippine genre painting, but it also provides us with a glimpse of the glorious Philippine life. Regrettably, most of his masterworks were destroyed in a fire in 1945, and the work at hand was one of the surviving pieces.
