With a lineage that boasts magnificent artistry, Orlina’s works drew great inspiration from the world around him, from mountain ranges to animals and his family members. His works carry a sense of Filipino-ness that comes from his unique, never-before-seen technique.

This 2007 Sierra Madre finds itself amongst Orlina’s Mountain Series. A series of peaks and summits made from various colored glasses, his Mountain Series is emblematic of Orlina and his tumultuous journey in glass sculpting. A lone artist on his journey, the Mountain Series did what Orlina did for his career — to vanquish and conquer great heights.

Often referred to as the “Backbone of Luzon,” the Sierra Madre Mountains are the longest mountain range in the Philippines. Bordering the eastern side of the country, the Sierra Madre is central to the protection of the Northern Philippines from its various yearly typhoons. From Cagayan to Quezon, Sierra Madre and its peaks and summits remain a fierce protector of its biodiversity and beyond.

Even more so, Sierra Madre is a cultural haven for many of the indigenous communities residing within its terrains. The Aeta and Ilongot communities have found refuge, community, and livelihood in the mountains. Their lasting indigenous knowledge led to the continuous flourishing of the flora and fauna around them, a give-and-take relationship that sustained both the Sierra Madre and the indigenous tribes throughout the years.

In that same spirit, Orlina’s Sierra Madre takes after the mountain ranger’s jagged yet lush terrains. The greenness of the carved asahi glass encapsulates Sierra Madre’s lush greenery, while the uneven peaks of the sculpture emphasize rather than distract from the unruly beauty of the mountains.

Hailing from Taal, Batangas, it is no surprise that Orlina takes great inspiration from nature. In a 2013 interview with ANC for the program 'Green Living,' Orlina delved deep into his various ecological engagements aside from his artworks.

\"I belong to the group named 'Ramon.' We plant trees...I think right now we have maybe planted more than 300,000 trees all over the Philippines,\" Orlina shares. \"I was also a member of the 'COCAP.' It's the 'Concerned Citizens Against Pollution.' We lobby Congress not to continue with the incinerator because [this is] against our Mother Earth.\"

Indeed, like many of his nature-inspired works, Sierra Madre is a testament to Orlina’s dedication to leave a lasting legacy in the ecological department. This three-dimensional impression of the Sierra Madre sheds light on the robustness of Mother Nature, emphasizing the importance of collectivity in our quest to create a better future.
