Her works are less about picturing the world than about staging an encounter between viewer and object—one that unfolds in real time, as the eye navigates the surface, registers its rhythms, and absorbs its subtleties. While Taniguchi is widely recognized for her monumental “brick” paintings—gridded, hand-painted modules built up over extended periods—her practice extends into sculpture, video, and installation, each medium approached with the same sustained rigor and meditative repetition.

Central to her method is the idea of process as a form of duration. She often begins with a predetermined structure—a grid, a modular arrangement, a repeated geometric unit—and then fills it in, one segment at a time, in a slow, methodical sequence. This durational approach infuses her works with a performative dimension: the act of making is embedded in the finished object, visible in the slight variations of tone and texture that accrue over time. These differences—what might be seen as imperfections in a purely mechanical system—become the very markers of human labor and attention, aligning her work with aspects of Minimalism while resisting its industrial uniformity.

In Taniguchi’s hands, repetition is not a deadening cycle but a structure that holds the possibility of subtle transformation. Each painting, sculpture, or spatial configuration is both fixed and in flux, its meaning shifting as the viewer moves through space. Exhibited close to the ground or leaning against walls, her works occupy a threshold between painting and sculpture, image and object, emphasizing their physical presence as much as their visual logic.

The piece here departs from her signature brick format yet retains the same conceptual DNA. The composition is structured as a three dimensional prism-like form, divided into sharply angled geometric panels. Each plane contains a distinct surface treatment: some densely stippled, others fractured into mosaic-like shards, others washed in velvety gradients of black and gray. The effect recalls both architectural schematics and geological cross-sections, situating the work between the built and the organic. The sharp white lines cutting through the form act as both separators and connectors, creating a fractured unity that suggests an object caught mid-reassembly. Ultimately, the work reveals Taniguchi’s sustained fascination with the interplay between system and variation. Even in this departure from the brick grid, her meticulous approach to surface-making transforms a static composition into a slow unfolding of difference, reminding the viewer that repetition, far from being inert, is a condition for subtle change.
