Aguilar for confirming the authenticity of this lot","provenance":"Acquired directly from the artist","exhibited":null,"literature":null,"write_up":"Starting from the 1970s, Federico Aguilar Alcuaz has embarked on what critic Alice Guillermo in her 2007 critique Sightings described as a genre of “beautiful, long-gowned women with a 19th-century air engaged in a variety of domestic activities.” A favored topic of his, this particular subject had been the main character of many of his paintings, including this 1985 work.<br><br>Almost a decade and a half since his Tres Marias series, the work at hand seems to be an offshoot of the popular series. A significant chunk of his Tres Marias features women in their distinct Spanish gowns; in the comfort and privacy of their own rooms, these women appear looser, more relaxed. It is a place where they can drop their societal expectations, leaving them to exist just as they are.<br><br>With this piece, Aguilar Alcuaz brings up that “relaxed” atmosphere a notch. These women, normally only slouching, now sleep slumped over the sofa. One has her head tucked into a pillow resting on the sofa’s arm, while the other one fell asleep with her cheek pressed against the back. Slivers of smooth, pale skin on their legs can be viewed as they haphazardly lie down.<br><br>Through his Tres Marias and this piece, Aguilar Alcuaz’s oeuvre explores solitude and privacy through a feminine domain. In these pieces, Aguilar Alcuaz removes both the societal and physical burden women experience – here, they are visibly relaxed, confident in their knowledge that they are safe within their walls. Here, they can slouch and relax, finally free to just be themselves.
