His mother, Paulina Gahol Orlin, is a devout Catholic who faithfully served the Minor Basilica of St. Martin De Tours Basilica and Our Lady of Caysasay in their hometown of Taal, Batangas. Active in renovation projects for her churches, Paulina was a staunch advocate for the preservation of old churches. She often found herself in disagreements with figures of authority, passionate in her mission for religious and historical artifacts. This left a strong effect on the impressionable Orlina, who inherited his mother's dedication and passion for restoration.

This 2007 Garden of Eden finds its inspiration from the Biblical place Orlina is probably knowledgeable about. Though he is better known for his large-scale religious sculptures like those in the Greenbelt Chapel, he has also created small-scale sculptures drawn from Biblical inspiration. While it is often religious figures, Orlina took a step back and instead portrayed a Biblical place.

Using carved asahi glass, Orlina’s Garden of Eden is a five-pillared creation, with each pillar featuring different cuts on every side. At first glance, his Garden of Eden may elude some of its viewers, but the beauty of his sculptures is that one may see a completely different image if they stand in a different position at a different time. Slowly but surely, these pillars turn into the majestic hills and plains of the Garden of Eden, its entrance hidden by a solemn and faithful guardian.

“The audience drawn to Orlina’s religious works is edified and blessed with a moral and spiritual understanding of one’s faith that goes beyond any branding or labeling,” Cid Reyes says in his book entitled ‘Ramon Orlina: Visions in Glass’. “These delightfully uplifting sculptures find their cherished place in the heart of a Catholic home.”<br
Indeed, Ramon Orlina’s Garden of Eden gives a refreshing look into a subject many Christians find themselves fascinated by. Despite that new look, Orlina’s religious works still echo his faithful reverences to the subject, opening up religion and its theology to the next generation through art, sculpture, and ideas that transcend belief and borders.
