From his early years, watercolor has been one of Manansala’s preferred mediums, honing his skills in layering and blending colors to create images in either a realistic or a washed manner.

Painted in 1971, Binangonan captures the town’s serene hilly topography and verdant foliage. The soft sunlight that seeps through the leaves and branches offers a perspective of someone nestled in the shade of sumptuous trees, enjoying a moment of relaxation while admiring the peaceful terrain. Manansala’s skilled knowledge of watercolor and his controlled use of water allowed the colors to flow and gently blend, creating a diffused, hazy picture, a view reminiscent of a person’s drooping eyes as he immersed himself in a peaceful siesta.

Devoid of Manansala’s signature vibrant hues and transparent cubism, this watercolor piece employs a washed technique. This piece not only showcases the artist’s mastery of his medium but also highlights his versatility. Indeed, his watercolor pieces are among his best works, proving his reputation in the Philippine art scene—a maestro who creates masterpieces across a wide range of style and medium.
