In his distinct modernist style of sharp edges and delineated figures, Ang’s oeuvre saw Jesus Christ strung up on that cross, His bones splayed and His body contorted in almost impossible places. Religious imagery, as it seems, is a central tenet of Ang’s works.

Rosary Queen follows the same religious imagery but attributes it to another religious figure: the Virgin Mary. For the most devout Catholics, the Virgin Mary is a central figure in their prayers. The rosary itself is a point of meditation on the lives of Christ Jesus and His mother, with the prayers calling upon the intercession of Mary.

Under Ang’s masterful modernist hands, he brings a sort of Filipino twist to the Virgin Mary. With his Cubist visual vernacular, Mary was stripped down to her barest essentials and left her only with monochromatic colors and edges. As such, Ang's Mary steps away from her holiness and into her flesh-and-blood counterpart. With her semi-obscured visage, Mary steps away from her religious connotations as the Mother and the Virgin, thus opening her to a myriad of interpretations. She becomes less mythical and more human.

Ang’s works, despite their harshness, do what many want to do with mythical figures – he brings them down, grounds them, and makes them no different from the rest of us.
