A passionate lepidopterist himself, one could almost certainly clock that vibrant and almost otherworldly color scheme as that of a butterfly, an unorthodox yet natural color.

This particular Search Mindscape, created in 1998, features the magical, almost otherworldly mountains that roll in between the vivid red of the setting sun and the calm blue of the ground. If one stands at a particular angle, the mountain range turns into clouds floating between the sea and the sky.

“His works are referred to as landscapes of the mind but his color harmonies and compositions had also been deeply inspired by the view from the peaks of the many mountains he had climbed,” Patrick de Veyra writes in a Lifestyle Inquirer article.

Nuyda’s words confirm this statement. “When you’re up in the mountains, the scenery is just unbelievable,” he says in a 2021 Lifestyle Asia interview. “I don’t bring a camera eh, baka mawala. So titignan ko lang.” This less-than-perfect rendering of the landscapes yields the factor that makes Nuyda’s works stand out. Indeed, their reduced reliance on faithful translation leaves space for more emotive pieces of work.
