His artistic bravura and use of light strokes and vivid hues create masterpieces that proudly present the Philippines—its people, nature, culture, and traditions.

Amorsolo's 1952 Under the Mango Tree is part of his bountiful harvest scenes. In this piece, the maestro's skilled and delicate brushwork profoundly captures the diligence and familial affection of the Filipino people. The Amorsolo light, though it illuminates the scene, is not the source of the warmth enveloping the piece. Instead, it emanates from the hardworking farmers on the ricefield, and their families cooking and waiting for them to eat together under the shade of the tree.

A cultural phenomenon in his lifetime, Amorsolo had a unique ability to turn any blank canvas into a buoyant image of his beloved country and compatriots. His genre and historical paintings not only offer appealing landscapes and portraits but also elicit a great sense of belonging to the Filipino nation.
