His Female and Child portrait, which was painted in 1972, exhibits such traits, with a woman dressed in crimson clothes carrying a little girl in a long white dress sitting in her lap. The illustration exudes the same aura that you usually feel in a European portrait—aristocratic, elegant, but still Filipino, as Alcuaz managed to highlight main Filipino traits and cultural values, such as the woman’s nose and skin complexion being darker than what you usually expect for a European portrait, as well as the common theme of the relationship between mother and child, being one of the core values that Filipinos cherish. Alcuaz’s work often reflects a blend of European influences with Filipino sensibilities, emphasizing a fullness and palpable presence in his compositions.
