The impact of the trauma may diminish over time, but it is already etched on our lives. Juvenal Sansó, a world-renowned artist, is not an exception. Despite the years and distance that separate him from his horrifying experiences during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines, he continues to carry the weight and torment of it all. Sansó's traumatic experiences manifested in his earlier works, veering away from the 'Amorsolo light,' creating anguished and grotesque images instead.<br><br>Perhaps, Sansó found healing in France and the arts. While the awe-inspiring views from Brittany soothe his mind, he conveys his emotions through painting. Under the encouragement and guidance of Edouard Georg, Sansó began to paint the resplendent landscapes and flora of the places he visited, such as this ca. 1960s painting. In Serenity in Bloom, the artist features a garden of flowers in full bloom. His blue and green-dominated palette exudes a profound sense of tranquility to everyone who comes across it, while his orange sky and tinges of red flowers spread warmth through his image. Yet, it would not be a Sansó piece without a hint of distortion, an artistic approach during his dark period, which he continued to incorporate into the majority of his subsequent works.
