As a fine arts student of the University of Santo Tomas, his elective theology classes paved the way for Parial’s interest in Philippine folk imagery. He studied the rituals, rites, and customs of both urban and rural folk religions, many of which found their way into his myriad canvases.<br><br>His 1983 Nuestra Señora de la Rosa traces its subject origin to the Virgen de la Rosa of Poblacion, Makati. The Parish of Sts. Peter and Paul houses the city’s longstanding patroness. A visage of the Blessed Virgin Mary with the child Jesus on one arm and a rose in the other, the Virgen de la Rosa inspires such great devotion among the Marian devotees of Manila that she is not only Makati’s patroness but also its \"Soberaña Emperatriz”—Her Sovereign Empress.<br><br>Parial’s Nuestra Señora de la Rosa overflows with the rich, vivid imagery that fills Filipino festivals. His horror vacui or fear of empty spaces finds its most exhilarating expression in his works, and so, in Nuestra Señora de la Rosa. As the Virgen de la Rosa stands in all her regal glory, the Infant Jesus on one side and three stalks of roses on the other, her magnificent red robe morphing into flowers and plants. At the bottom of the canvas was a group of four young Filipinas, heads covered in a veil and gazing reverently ahead. All these in their totality convey a sort of veneration that captivates Nuestra Señora De La Rosa’s devotees.<br><br>In a typical Mario Parial fashion, no inch of the canvas was left untouched, either by decoration or by color, and it speaks to the artist’s skill that none of it looks cluttered or out of balance. There is a \"native expression of unadulterated glee\" in his oeuvre, making his works a delight to behold and a catch for many collectors to have.
