A story within another story, there are two paintings happening simultaneously within his canvases, a push-and-pull effect he creates through his purposeful usage of vandalism and controlled destruction.

On the surface, Cruz’s works are characterized primarily by the thick squiggles of paint and varying textures of smeared color covering their canvases. In criss-crossing stripes of paint seemingly squeezed directly from the tube, it might be understandable why some might make the mistake of believing this is to be the piece’s only element.

In reality, it is only half of the story – almost entirely covered by the abstract paint streaks is another painting. Contrasting the fairly modern art of abstraction, this second painting often takes after the classical style of painting. Whether it is a portrait or a landscape, one thing is clear: more often than not, it follows after that classic Western style, its basic compositional elements still evident under all that paint.

This particular work, the 2012 Noise against the Flash, is quintessential Cruz. With its three-dimensional paint layer, one can almost miss the classical painting underneath. Unlike some of Cruz’s work, Noise against the Flash shows only the feet of the people in his classical painting. Based on what one can see, though, one can gauge out an armor-clad pair of legs and what looks like the tip of a sword facing the ground.

More than the destruction, what is important is the reason for said defecation. The clear delineation of the above and the below creates the question of which is which. Should one elevate the classical style of painting with its aesthetically pleasing proportions and realistic depiction as the default standard of beauty? Would the avant-garde of the art world soon find its way into the annals of history?

His act of vandalism, too, brings to the forefront the question of what is acceptable in the greater art world. An art form more often seen on the streets than in the collections of multi-millionaires, Cruz blurs that limitation and creates a new definition of what art could and should be. “Cruz’s mark making is therefore not random and gratuitous, but rather a challenge to its painting’s neutrality, a questioning of its assumed innocence,” Nemerofsky Ramsay writes. Put simply, the works of Cruz elevate the voices of those from the margins, whose works are often disregarded as “true” art. It is a continued and active question of the art world and what it considers true art or not.
