Though younger than the Neo-Realist group, he was never really a follower of Manansala but a peer himself, a talented artist who entered the UP School of Fine Arts as one of ten young scholars of Ramon Roces of the Manila Times. Submitting only a pencil portrait of American movie star Humphrey Bogart, he found himself in the halls of the school. Though he had to quit college after only a semester, his career in an ad agency incidentally led him right back into the art industry, where he would go on to mentor students who came from the university.<br><br> His 1980 Crucifixion embodies the pastoral, the folk, and the heroic — the characteristics that exemplify his favorite themes. Like many of his works, this Crucifixion situates itself in a space between times, where Roman soldiers intermingle with 16th-century Filipinos. On the shore where Magellan docked, several Filipinos in native attire are preparing to lift the cross on which Christ is crucified. These anachronistic elements serve only to highlight the transcendence of religion as it is used in conquest. As rabbis and Filipinos alike crowd to see Christ be crucified on unfamiliar shores, the viewers are reminded of the multiple transformations of Jesus Christ, and religion’s ever-changing facets to adapt to their constituents.
