A lemon or citrus fruit can be seen in the lower left corner. All of these sit atop a red table, which contrasts sharply with the cooler blue and neutral-toned background. The background contains abstract, fractured shapes, which add dynamic tension and texture, possibly representing objects or shadows in a cubist dissection of space.

In 1959, Vitalis had been deeply immersed in the Parisian modernist milieu, and this work reflects obvious influences of Cubism (Picasso, Braque, etc.) The fragmentation of form, geometric abstraction, and flattening of depth, especially in the bottle and fish, shows in particular a clear influence from Analytical Cubism. But Vitalis was avid of integrating into his own all the trends which had been emerging on the bright French scene, and the vivid, non-naturalistic color palette, especially the warm reds and cool blues, recalls Fauvist approaches.

Colour is used to define planes rather than create illusionistic depth.

Despite the European style, the fish subject, typical in Filipino everyday life, also reflects a nostalgic cultural identity rooted in his homeland. This balance of local theme and European technique was characteristic of Vitalis’s synthesis during his mature years in France.

This 1959 painting shows Vitalis in a mature, experimental phase, confidently bridging European modernism and synthetizing all the trendy movements of his time with a Filipino narrative core. The work is not merely a still life—it is a study in form, fragmentation, and chromatic tension, exemplifying his unique voice in the Filipino diaspora’s artistic evolution.","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":null,"alias":null,"hp":1200000,"bp":0.2016,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":1200000,"userBid":null,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":1441920,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":61995,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/116/150/lot/79.jpg","isFeatured":1},{"id":62104,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/116/150/lot/79d.jpg","isFeatured":0},{"id":62099,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/116/150/lot/79c.jpg","isFeatured":0},{"id":62097,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/116/150/lot/79a.jpg","isFeatured":0},{"id":62096,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/116/150/lot/79b.jpg","isFeatured":0}]},"increment":[900000,1000000,1100000,1200000,1300000,1400000,1500000,1600000,1700000,1800000,1900000,2000000,2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":78,"next":80,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
