Ocampo's Mother and Child is a precious gift by the artist to his dear friend and art patron, Don Vicente \"Tiking\" H. Lopez, Jr. At the back of the painting, Ocampo inscribed a handwritten dedication:<br><br> \"For Tiking, Who undoubtedly deserves the title of \"Art Patron of the Year,\" 1971 Nanding 8/21/71\"<br><br>In his dedication, Ocampo referred to Don Tiking as \"Art Patron of the Year.\" In late June 1971, a group of young artists who had Don Tiking as their art patron held an exhibition at the Nayong Pilipino in celebration of Negros Week. These artists included Justin Nuyda, Ibarra de la Rosa, Angelito Antonio, Sofronio Y. Mendoza, and Antonio Austria.<br>A Manila Bulletin article dated 26 June 1971 wrote of this exhibition, \"But perhaps, the most interesting presentation will be the latest works of a group of young artists who look up to Vicente Lopez, Jr. as their art patron.”<br><br>The article continues, \"Although he is better known in the business world as a successful executive, Lopez is actually one of the country's avid art collectors. \"He has recently converted his hacienda in San Carlos City into a haven for artists who devote themselves to perfecting techniques.<br><br>\"Lopez today boasts of one of the biggest collections of Filipino paintings in the country today. His office at the Elena Apartments in Ermita has become converted into an art gallery,\" the article concludes.<br><br>Two months prior, in April 1971, some of the artists mentioned above also participated in an exhibition sponsored by painter-critic Alfredo Roces at F. Sionil Jose's Solidaridad Galleries. Nuyda and De la Rosa, alongside Johnny Altomonte, Angelito David, and Francis Yap, visited the town of Bagawinis in Negros Oriental on a painting trip sponsored by Don Tiking. Roces wrote in his The Sunday Times column that these artists’ “landscape show entirely distinct personalities viewing one landscape setting with entirely different eyes and styles. While there is no cohesive whole, it helps provide a glimpse at efforts to keep alive landscape painting in this country.”<br><br>It is just fitting for Ocampo to gift this painting of a mother and child to Don Tiking in celebration of the two successive exhibitions of his protégés. The painting is a testament to Don Tiking's genuine goodwill to these artists, like a mother rearing her children to the full flowering of their talents. Several of Don Tiking's \"art children\" have already been veritable icons of Filipino art, with each having their own legacies of modernist brilliance.
