A prominent Filipino painter known for his expressionistic figurative paintings that highlight the marginalized members of society, the piece depicts a man hugging a woman, who appears to look away, seemingly avoiding the man's gaze. The piece was painted using the techniques of cubism and expressionism to contort their bodies and faces (hence the angular state of the woman's head).<br> What makes this piece humanistic is its focus on the expression of the figures, as well as their clothing. Based on the similar clothes, it might be implied that the individuals in the piece are both struggling economically, as they share what seems to be the man's clothes to cover themselves up. It highlights Olmedo's preference to illustrate street characters like musician prostitutes and the urban poor with profound compassion, dignity, and empathy to portray the inner torment of modern man.
