This particular lot shows several of Bencab’s renditions of Mother and Child, all with their native sensibilities. In a Bencab-typical painting, the woman is draped in an exorbitant amount of fabric, a study of textiles. Her child is swaddled to her chest, wrapped in the same cloth the woman has around herself. The Filipino-ness of the subject matter is evident in their posture and the color they are drenched in — sepia and brown have always been central to the works of Bencab, colors he has found to be uniquely and unequivocally Filipino.
