Here, the young Pereira would produce a weekly editorial cartoon, with bold washes injecting a dramatic atmosphere to the scene, a style he derived from painting. The Philippine Free Press was the first and oldest weekly news magazine in the country, established in 1908, and was known for its critical reporting, especially on social and political issues. Furthermore, this publication introduced “Juan dela Cruz,” the male national personification of the Philippines. Indeed, this lot of pen and ink drawings is a product of Pereira’s artistic skill, in conjunction with the Free Press’ philosophy.
