Most often known for his genre paintings, he is also recognized for his cartoons, which belong to the first generation of Filipino cartoonists that emerged during the early years of American occupation. <br> <br> This particular lot offers four of Pineda’s graphite works. In distinct black-and-white pieces, Pineda shows the various aspects of country life as he creates a snapshot of their lives. In one portrait, he portrays a woman on the grassy banks of a river fishing; another man stands above a field, his height impossible to measure, among others. In one important piece, Pineda references El Renacimiento, a Spanish-Tagalog newspaper that was in circulation until the 1940s, a testament to Pineda’s grounded Filipino approach.
